5:00 p.m.

This year's speaker for the Boston Regional Lecture will be MMUF PhD Zine Magubane, Associate Professor of Sociology at Boston College. Dr. Magubane was selected as a fellow at Princeton University and earned her PhD in sociology at Harvard University; her areas of specialization include social theory, the sociology of post-coloniality, race and ethnicity, globalization, race and popular culture, gender and sexuality, and the sociology of African societies. The title of her talk will be "Darkness Made Visible: How the 'Racial Ontology' of Sociology's Past Holds the Key to Sociology's 'Global' Future." She will explore an alternative history of the founding of American sociology that locates the discipline's beginnings in the writings of pro-slavery imperialists, and will discuss how the nationalistic sociology of "race relations'" isolates the study of race from issues of "general" sociological concern and has served as a substitute for sustained engagement with sociology's colonialist and imperialist past.

Fellows at all levels of the program, including current undergraduates, are welcome to attend, as are coordinators. Please RSVP to mellonmays@ssrc.org no later than Wednesday, March 30th. Please note that if you are not living in the Boston area but would like to attend, you must RSVP to ensure a spot at the lecture.
